Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful information for participants preparing for Nada Samarpanam 2026.

Do participants need to bring a sruthi box?

Yes. Participants must bring their own sruthi box. The organizers do not provide sruthi boxes.

Does CAMAGA provide any musical instruments?

No. Participants are expected to bring their own instruments.

Is there a penalty for exceeding the time limit?

There is no explicit penalty for not completing the performance within the allotted time. A buzzer will sound when the time is up, and the participant must stop immediately. The judges may also ask the participant to stop before the time limit. Participants are encouraged to choose and prepare items that fit comfortably within the prescribed time.

For the Niraval / Kalpana Swaram category, is the entire krithi required?

No. Participants only need to sing a few lines leading into the section where they intend to perform the niraval or kalpana swaram before beginning the improvisation.

In the Krithi competition, kalpana swarams are not permitted. Are chitta swarams allowed?

Yes. Chitta swarams that are an integral part of the composition are permitted.

Are there restrictions on the composers whose compositions may be performed?

No. The competition is not restricted to the compositions of Saint Thyagaraja. Compositions by any recognized composer are welcome, subject to the competition rules.

Do participants need to submit a list of songs for the judges?

Yes. Each participant must submit a list of five (Senior), 3(Junior), 1-2(Sub-junior) krithis for the vocal and instrumental categories. All registered participants will be sent a template to fill in and bring on the day of the competition. For each krithi, include:

Opening words of the sahitya
Raga
Tala
Composer

The judges will select one of the listed krithis and may ask for the krithi, raga alapana, niraval, kalpana swaram, or any combination of these, depending on the competition category.

Do participants in the percussion categories need to submit a list of items?

Yes. Junior and Senior participants must submit a list of three (3) talams and nadais on the application form. Sub-Junior participants must submit one (1) talam and nadai.

Are pakka vadhyams permitted for vocal and instrumental performances?

No. Pakka vadhyams are not allowed for vocal or instrumental categories of the competition.
